Description
Rei Kawakubo, a renowned Japanese fashion designer, is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the industry. In addition to her notable Comme des Garçons collections, she has engaged in numerous sneaker collaborations throughout the years. Particularly noteworthy is her collaboration with Converse Chuck Taylor, under her sub-label Comme des Garçons PLAY. Kawakubo’s distinct modifications and stylings have elevated the iconic Chuck Taylor silhouette.
Kawakubo’s initial iteration of the Converse Chuck Taylors took place in 2009 when she stripped back the original design by removing the contrast stitching. Six years later, in 2015, she chose the All Star Chuck 70s as a foundation, resulting in a shoe that garnered immense popularity and has been re-released annually since then.
A standout feature of the shoes from the Comme des Garçons PLAY line is the instantly recognizable heart and eyes logo, originally conceived and designed by Filip Pagowski. However, the philosophy behind the collaborations shifted from the minimalist approach of the original 2009 version. The Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star 70s Hi Comme des Garçons PLAY pays homage to the classic Chuck Taylor style of the 1970s. It boasts a high-top collar that snugly embraces the ankles, a black upper, white laces, and a white sole and toe cap.
